Moksha

The release from ignorance into enlightenment, moksha (or mukti) is considered the ultimate aim of meditation and the spiritual life. It is also translated ‘spiritual salvation.’ Because Hindus maintain the principle of reincarnation after death, wherein each life will be renewed and inhabit some new form in a subsequent life depending on its karmic performance in the present life, moksha is desirable because it releases the soul from the cycle of embodied life, separate from Brahman, the universal force. Paradoxically, because moksha is a renunciation of all desire, achieving moksha implies a lack of desire for it. The cycle of life, death, and rebirth is known as samsara. The principle of morality that governs how a life will be reincarnated is called karma. Moksha, then, is the transcendence beyond karma, ending samsara.
