Chapter 9

Adam cuddled against Jack in the den of Mark and Steve’s fourbedroom Bel Air home. Mark was reading Alex’s script, the light of a table lamp lit behind him while Steve rested his head on Mark’s lap, watching The First 48.

Jack was caressing Adam’s hair absently, his gaze on the intense police show which Steve insisted they watch. Adam didn’t mind. He was tired and only paying half a mind to the graphic scenes of real life homicides.

Memories swept Adam up about when Keith O’Leary first joined the cast of Forever Young. He had sent Keith on the interview for the casting call. At the time Keith was living with a woman who had been his girlfriend, but the woman soon became just his friend.

It was after continuous sexual contact with Carl on the set that Keith had fallen in love with the handsome star. Adam remembered vividly advising Keith to deny, deny, deny, when it came to his sexuality and the media.

Life was coming full circle with Alexander having to make the same ruthless decisions.

Adam peeked over at Mark whose expression was stern as he read the explicit details of what his son was going to be doing on television. Any father would be concerned, if not downright upset. Alex was lucky he had a gay father. Keith hadn’t been so lucky. As far as Adam was aware, Keith and his father were estranged ever since Keith came out at the Emmy awards, kissing Carl on stage. Scandalous.

Steve muted the commercial when it interrupted the show. He asked, “Anyone want anything?”

“I’m good,” Jack said.

“Mark?” Steve flicked his finger against the script from underneath.

“Hm? No. I don’t want anything.” Mark set the paperwork aside and made eye contact with Adam.

Adam could read his fury. “I warned you.”

“He has a steady diet of spunk.” Mark glared.

“What?” Steve sat up and took the script.

“Simulated.” Adam sat up as well. “Mark, it’s not porn.”

“You do realize how many young men will be wagging their dicks in his face, regardless.”

Adam rubbed his forehead, then his eyes.

“I’m going to be with him on the set.” Jack interlaced his fingers on his lap.

“How are you going to do that?” Mark asked. “You are a lawyer. You have things to do.”

“I’ll take time off.”

“This is ridiculous!” Mark threw up his hands.

Steve leaned against Mark’s shoulder. “Where are these sex scenes?”

Mark took back the script and flipped pages.

Adam felt sick to his stomach. “I don’t know what to do, Mark. It’s like history repeating itself. Keith O’Leary went through the same thing.”

“Keith is not my son.” Mark handed Steve back the script, pointing.

Steve took it back, focusing on it again.

“You have to let him do it.” Jack propped his feet up on the hassock. “I know it’s hard because of the character he’s playing, but look at Keith, since you’re making a comparison.” Jack opened his hands in a beckoning gesture, palms up. “Keith has won three Emmy’s, and has a huge fan club. The guy’s a spokesman for gay rights, supports several LGBT foundations; both he and Carl do.
