The Weavers had moved a small table from the junk room across the hall into the bedroom. On this table sat a bowl filled with candy, more than likely placed there by Ann. Drew picked out a chocolate favorite of his and popped it in his mouth. Also on the table was a copy of a magazine called “Sports and Spokes” which contained an article about Drew. William must have found the copy amongst the many other personal affects stored in the rooms. As Drew flipped through the pages, he found articles on many Para-sports including basketball, fishing, archery, and his article Paralympic shooting events where he once competed in the SH1 category in both rifle and pistols.

Since the moment he received a BB Gun as a birthday present, marksmanship had always been a lifelong passion for Drew. The Marine Corp offered him many opportunities to hone his shooting skills. It was in the service that he learned the art of firing at moving targets.

The room was nearly pitch-black when Drew finally closed the pages of the magazine. He filled his mouth with a few more pieces of chocolate and moved Deuce away from the table and over to the bed. Although there was more prepping he should do, he decided to call it a day.

The transfer to this bed was a bit more challenging. The height of the king size coil spring mattress upstairs was damn near double the thickness of the mattress downstairs. The other problem was that the mattress was very soft, which was the opposite of the firm mattress surface downstairs. The soft foam made supporting his own weight through his arms and hands difficult. Drew solved this problem by clearing off one of the two night stands which four or more inches shorter than the bed height. He then faced the side of the bed with Deuce, transferred over to the top of the nightstand, and then over into the bed.

In the end, the struggle was well worth it. He had not been in this bed in ages, and the memory foam was extremely comfortable. Possibly even better than a warm bath. The only light that penetrated the upstairs was still coming from the street lights. They cast a beautiful glow on the ceiling. The only sound he could hear was that of a fly buzzing about the room. Considering the dropping temperatures, a fly indoors this time of the year was rare but not unlikely. Still, he lay for a while under the thick quilted sheets and watched the bug as it moved about looking for food. The fly’s performance was extremely boring. It was long before Drew could barely keep his eyes open as he looked at the picture of his parents that hung on the bedroom wall. “Good night Dad, good night Mom, good night Deuce, good night fly.”

In the fortress, Hilda Cole had relieved Becca so that she could go inside, warm up, and grab a bite to eat. Her father was sitting at the dinner table counting emergency money that he kept in a coffee can.
