Magic never lied.

Which would have made things far too easy, Chaz Neoma supposed. No, for this, they only had themself to blame.

“You,” Chaz drawled, sprawled naked and on their back in Liam Morgenstern’s bed, “are a spectacularly terrible idea.”

Chaz had known that long before their needles had etched the first line of black ink into Liam’s umber skin. They should’ve never taken this job, never mind how good the money was. Never mind how thrilling it felt to finally carve their art and magic into Liam’s skin.

The thought made the ever-present hum of Weave magic flowing through Chaz’s veins and its manifestations inked all over their body swell to a roar that only their hands and needles on Liam’s skin could soften. And even then, part of Chaz knew the blood welling at their needles demanded something closer. Something more like lips and tongue.

Parts most definitely not outlined in the standard waivers Chaz had all clients sign.

And this was much worse than a combination of magic and desire.

Bad enough to mix tattooing with stolen goods, especially when it involved lifting a ship out from under an agent of the Allied Planetary Forces. With anyone else, this would have been one by the books: drug the pilot, disable the ship’s navcom, jettison the ship’s original crew off to the closest deserted moon in the ship’s short-range escape pods, bag another ship jacking that’d result in a happy bidder, and secure a full account for Chaz. Knowing this ship was one of the APF’s only sweetened the deal.

But this was Liam fucking Morgenstern, one of Chaz’s oldest friends, and quite often, lovers. The one person whose lure Chaz had never been able to escape—the worst mistake in Chaz’s life, and one they’d make over and over again, given the chance.

“Am I now?” Liam’s tongue traced the sensitive skin below Chaz’s navel, following a cluster of triangles tattooed there, the movement punctuated with enough teeth to make Chaz hiss and dig their fingers into Liam’s tangled sheets.

The nest of soft pillows on Liam’s oversized bed seemed at odds in the middle of what must’ve been a freight captain’s utilitarian cabin once, but now was transformed into something luxurious and unabashedly frivolous in minimalism, paired with real linen and silks. Holographic fireflies twinkled in the air, illuminating Liam’s tight black curls like fairy lights. Their lazy dance left shimmering contrails painted across riveted metal walls, glowing and fading to the rhythm of soft music coming from the ship’s speakers set into the ceiling above.

It was exactly what Vee used to call Liam’s Fuck Me Playlist, usually before she gave it one particularly exaggerated rendition at Academy Karaoke Nights, just to get a rise out of Liam.

In the middle of a cargo glider, this space was a definite reminder of the three of them. It had Liam’s penchant for hedonism, the soft purples and pinks that echoed Chaz’s ever-changing hair, and the fireflies were definitely Vee’s touch, even though she’d never admit as much.
