Chapter Sixteen

Sunday, August 17th, 2014 - 2:03 a.m.

We made it to the Greater St. Mark Family Church just before four in the afternoon. People were jammed into the building like sardines, but with his camera and my notebook, we managed to squeeze our way into the press section. I scanned the audience in attendance, amazed at all of the other journalists in the room, not to mention the citizens. Anger floated through the air in the room.

Rev. Jesse L. Jackson and others were on scene. A few minutes after we arrived, Governor Jay Nixon made his way to the microphone. Jack snapped photos with his camera as I scanned the audience before listening to his announcement to get a grip on the mood of the scene. It was one thing that made my blog so popular with readers around the world. After a minute, I began listening to him talk.

“…If there was an easy way to separate those who hurt from those who help, we would. But it’s hard, and especially at night we can’t. So to protect the people and property of Ferguson, today I signed an Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency and implementing a curfew in the impacted area of Ferguson,” Governor Nixon said into the microphone.

“Again, this is not to silence the people of Ferguson, but to address those who are drowning out the voice of the people with their actions. We will not allow a handful of looters to endanger the rest of this community.We still need more answers about what happened one week ago at Canfield Green. And I will continue to push for those answers, and demand transparency and accountability and expediency.

“But if we are going to achieve justice, we must first have - and maintain - peace. This is a test; the eyes of the world are watching. This is a test of whether a community, any community, can break the cycle of fear, distrust, and violence, and replace them with peace, strength, and ultimately justice. It will not happen in one night, but that is where it will start.

“So tonight, let that journey continue. And in the morning, this community will rise with the sun to renew its quest for justice. Thank you. God bless you. And God bless Ferguson.”

The crowd erupted in discussion, most obviously not satisfied with the announcement.

“We will not get sleep until we get justice for Michael Brown!” a man in the crowd shouted.

“Sleep is not an option, Governor Nixon!” another angry voice declared.

Captain Ron Johnson got in front of the podium and talked about the FBI bringing forty agents into the area to help. Jack moved around, trying to get shots of the crowd. As we worked, I wondered if he would let me put some of his photos up on my blog. They would make the posts that much better and attract an audience for both of us.

Half an hour later, we walked out just before the question and answer session concluded. Citizens yelled as we made our way through the crowd.
