Concern

The second I got home, I was close to collapsing. My dad was in, still in his shoes, taking his dog collar off, and looked horrified.

“Darling, you look like a ghost!” He threw his arms around me.

“I feel like one, Dad.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t pick you up at the airport.”

“It’s okay. You had a funeral.”

“Come on, let’s put the kettle on.”

He made me a cup of tea. It was the first time someone had offered to make me a drink in two months. I grabbed onto it like a child reaching for a beaker, blowing on it gently, gazing into the middle of the living room.

“Home now. How’s that foot?”

In truth, the foot had healed quickly. It wasn’t broken like last time, only sore, but I wanted to keep the physical bandage.

“It’s okay.”

“We’ll feed you up and get you better.”

“Thank you.”

I had no more words. I had lost the ability to find many except please, thank you and sorry. The first things you teach a child. He was diplomatic, mentioning the ‘feed you up’ bit. What was it they say about never trusting a skinny chef? Little did I realise I had lost six kilograms since they last saw me. It had gone unnoticed on board, the weight slipping off day by day through lack of sleep and worry, but the results were more dramatic to people who hadn’t seen me in months.

Dad tucked me into bed at 3 p.m. and patted my head.

“It’s okay, Mel.”

I could see his concern; it was written all over his face.

What’s happened to her?
