I got a good ribbing from my men this morning when I rolled up at my house in the same clothes I was wearing when I left for the train station yesterday. But, they also all know about me and Bethie. Hell, several of them went to school with us and with this town being so small and close, it’s never been a secret that none of my relationships have related to much since my heart was already firmly claimed by a woman who left me here to serve her country.

Jake, my right hand man and friend from high school, is helping me re-dig an irrigation channel in one of the far fields of the spread since some recent weather pretty much filled it with dirt and debris. He leans on the handle of the shovel after shoving his hat back and wiping his brow. Looking at me, he smirks. “So, you and Bethanie… that’s a thing now?”

I snort. “That’s always been a thing.”

Slapping the rag he uses to wipe his face and neck against his leg, he chuckles. “No shit. I mean, it’s happening now? Like she’s back and she’s with you?”

My brow arches at the tone I’m hearing. “Yup, that’s what’s happening. Why? Were you thinking you’d have a shot?”

He laughs so hard he stumbles. As he finds his footing and straightens, he glances up at me. The humor in his eyes has my stance relaxing.

Damn that jealousy flared like lava for a second.

“Hell no. No sane man for one hundred miles would think he had a shot with Bethanie. You staked that claim when we were twelve, bro. Don’t you remember?”

I do remember. I’m surprised he does though.

I nod. “I do. You remember that?”

He laughs again and pulls the shovel out of the hard ground. As he starts digging, he winks at me over his shoulder. “Um, yes. I don’t think anyone ever forgot that. Dude, Butch said something stupid about Bethanie getting tits and you grabbed ahold of him so fast, no one saw it coming. You threatened to knock his ass out in the middle of PE with most of the school watching if he ever so much as looked at her again. You said to everyone, ‘If anyone ever says anything like that about my future wife again, I’ll beat your ass so hard your kids will still feel it.’ After that, no one even noticed her. It was like, ‘Nope, Bethanie Reynolds is off limits.’ No one even thought to ask her out. It was duly noted that she was your girl. Not that she ever minded, even though she left.” He turns back and looks at me. He smiles. “I’m glad she’s back, man. You deserve to be happy and she deserves a man like you. I don’t know much about what she went through, I’ve never been the only survivor of an attack, but I know that it’s got to fuck a person up and not everyone can deal with that and the emotional mess that’s got to leave behind.
