Travelling in her cramped hiding space was uncomfortable, and it was boring. She had nothing to do for hours on end, and she could not even really hear the conversations of the people around her. At best she could hear muffled voices, at worst there was just the creaking and moving of the cargo around her. Perhaps the only good thing about it was that she was resting a lot and her strength was coming back to her. That and the fact Healer Goodwin’s medicine made her sleep often.

The third day of travel was the worst though. The first two days had been relatively short, and by limiting her water intake she had been able to manage by sneaking out at night to take care of nature. But the third day for some reason was much longer. They did not stop until well into the night, and Aliah was bursting. A quick peak out of her hiding place showed her that there were too many people around for her to risk getting out.

She stifled a groan as she sat back down, wondering how long before her companions went to bed and she could sneak out? Then she realised that this was not like the other nights. There was no sound of camp being set up, and the horse hooves sounded like they were on cobblestones, not dirt.

Had they come to the end of the journey already? Aliah’s mind began churning over. Would they unload tonight? If they did, would she be able to escape? And how far would she be able to run with an achingly full bladder?

Taking a deep breath she slowed her breathing the way her father’s sword master had shown her when he taught her to fight. As she concentrated on her breathing she did not notice someone start to undo the canvas on the other side of her hiding place, she nearly jumped out of her skin when a voice came out of the darkness beside her.

‘Crawl quietly towards me. Try not to make a noise or disturb anything. When you get to the side, slide out your bag. I will catch it. Then roll yourself out and follow me. Don’t try to run away, you will be caught.’

A number of choice words her father would not approve of her uttering ran through her head. How had he known she was here? Did he mean her harm? Was there any way she could get out without following his directions?

‘Quickly now. There is a king’s wizard here. I suspect he is looking for you. He will find you easily enough if you don’t follow my directions. And I am assuming you do not want that to happen.’

A wizard? Here? How did that happen? How could she not notice that? Should she trust this person, or should she give herself over to the wizard? Then she remembered her father’s chief advisor, the wizard, Millard, and the way he looked as she boarded the ship when she left home. He was gleeful, almost as if he somehow gained something from her departure.
