THE CLOUD OF DUST, spurred up by sudden stopping of the horses hooves on the hilltop, puffs around them and blocks their view of the battle that’s already raging below. Macha strains to see down into the fray and looks to Badb for assistance. As if reading her mind, Badb leans forward on her mount at an angle and blows in a clockwise motion. Her powers strong enough to manipulate all forms of air, she pushes the dust out of their line of vision and receives a nod of thanks from Macha.

Just as she feared, Balor hasn’t waited for first light. Macha looks down on the frightful scene below and something inside her heart hardens. She’s vexed with her ex-lover for sure, but this is something more. A strong acidic taste rises in the back of her throat, and she chokes it down. She has no taste for bloodshed, but neither will she submit to this foolish God. She cracks her neck, first to one side and then the other.

“Off you go, little one,” she says, the false calmness of her voice lending her a deadly tone. “Stay here away from the battle.” She helps Morragan off her horse and to the ground and looks her dead in the eyes.

Morragan nods, “Be safe sisters.” She pats the flank of Macha’s horse, perhaps hoping to calm its nerves as it dances in place, ears back and keen on the battle sounds below.

Macha, Badb, and Nemain spur their mounts to the edge of the hilltop and hold the position. She wants her warriors to see them. She wants them to know that she is the Queen of War. As the first streaks of orange and yellow ease across the morning sky, the three sisters raise their arms in unison, calling on their new powers. Dark clouds swirl to life and work to blot out the encroaching rays of sun. Great winds whip around the trio, causing their hair and dresses to float around them in an aura of untapped magic. A crack of thunder roars as a strike of lightning splits the sky in half, branching out, brilliant against the now dark sky, and lands in the center of the battlefield where the Fomorians are thickest. The force of the lightning strike hits like a mighty explosion, causing bits of earth and body parts of three of the blue-skinned giants to fly high into the sky.

Badb throws her head back and laughs before turning a wicked look on her sister. “To the fray!” she screams and kicks her mount into a fast gallop.

Macha and Nemain exchange a knowing glance and follow close behind her. The trio, galloping down the hill, their hair spilling behind them and powers crackling, create a formidable site.

At the bottom of the hill, Macha leaps from her horse and smacks it on the rear. The horse takes off for safety. She scans the battlefield and quickly spots the one-eyed Fomorian giant she singled out from the hilltop. The cyclops, standing roughly fifteen feet tall, blindly swings a spiked club back and forth.
