Chapter 20

I wanted to curl up on the bed and pout, but that’s not what Rusty taught me to do. How could I be away from him? My heavy heart dropped to my toes. I crossed my arms. “I’m not coming here by myself or going back to the Martins.”

Sam clutched the back of my neck gently. “You won’t be. Also, I think Gregori and Montae have made things crystal clear to the Martins. that you will never be going back there.”

I blinked. “You mean Gregori saw them?”

Sam stretched his arms over his head. “Yeah, he did. I wouldn’t worry about the them. Trust me.”

A lump formed in my throat. “I want to go home.”

“I do, too. Tell you what. Let me see if you can have lessons or something at our place. Maybe you can visit and only come to school when they need you to, I don’t know, for like exams or something. You up for that?”

I looked around the oversized room. All I wanted was to be back home at the Ellises’ place, where I belonged. “Maybe. But what if they don’t let me go for it?”

He walked over to me and gripped my shoulders. “They won’t force you, dude. They need you desperately, but according to their beliefs, you have to choose your destiny. No one can force you.”

I hung my head. “Even if more of them die?”

He released me. “Even if that happens.”

I rubbed my foot over the other one. “I don’t want anyone to die because of me.”

“Why don’t you take a shower, dude?” He punched me in the arm. “You stink to high heaven. You don’t won’t want the lady Ebony to catch a whiff of you like that, do you?”

Heat swam over my cheeks. “Shut up.”

He clapped my back. “I’ll wait for you.”

Within minutes, I followed Sam out of my room. I kept my eyes cast down.

A shadow stepped in front of us.

Lucien towered over me. “Don’t you ever make our mother cry again.”

His dark scowl froze my blood. The murderous glint in his eyes reminded of Bobby’s right before he beat me up. If Sam hadn’t been here, I know he’d have hurt me, brother or not brother. I clutched Sam’s shirt and hid behind him.

Raven hurried down the hall. “Lucien, no.”

He glanced over his shoulder. “Stay out of this, Raven.”

Sam shoved Lucien. “Knock it off, asshole.”

Raven clutched Lucien’s arm. “Please, don’t.”

He jerked his arm free. “You’re damn lucky you’ve got your bodyguard with you.” He turned and left.

“Sorry about that,” Raven said. “Everyone’s very protective of the Queen.”

I watched Lucien make his way down the hall. Yet again, in so many ways he reminded me of Rusty. “Yeah, I got that.”

“It’s okay, dude.” Sam ruffled my hair again. “No one’s going to hurt you. Come on.”

Raven grinned. “Especially not if I’m around.”

“I wanted to thank you for healing me last night.”

“No problem. As a Defender, it’s my job to save people.” She motioned with her hand. “Abrianna sent me to tell you dinner’s ready.
