Chapter Twelve
âThereâs nothing going on between Piper and me. Weâre friends, have been since we were little, crazy kids terrorizing our Pre-K teacher, but weâve never been together as anything more.â
They were in the elevator when Ben made that announcement.
Her hands twisted in front of her. âIâ¦didnât ask.â
âDidnât you?â
Her gaze cut to him.
âI was celebrating with Piper when you came into the office. Sheâs pregnant, and probably telling my lucky brother that news right now. Iâm going to be an uncle.â His smile was absolutely thrilled. His eyes gleamed. âAnd I canât wait.â
Her heart was drumming too fast. She stared at him and realizedâthe baby that Piper carried was completely and totally wanted. She could already see the plans and dreams in Benâs eyes. Soccer games? Princess parties? Campouts? There was so much hope there.
And if Ben was this excited, she could only imagine how thrilled Eric must be.
âCongratulations.â Courtney cleared her throat. âIâm happy for all of you.â
His gaze raked her.
The elevator doors opened, and Courtney pretty much surged out. But he caught her before sheâd gone too far. His fingers wrapped around her elbow, much like when heâd ânudgedâ Piper. Only when Ben touched her, Courtney felt a surge of heat pulse through her. Her breath came faster. Her skin seemed more sensitive. Her entire body reacted as she turned toward him.
âAnd thatâs why.â He wasnât smiling now. He backed her up until he caged her between a nearby wall and his body. âThatâs why Piper and I were always just friends. Because when I touched her, I didnât feel the surge.â
Wait, heâd felt a surge, too?
âI touch you, and itâs like my whole body gets hyper tuned. I can feel everything more.â
That was exactly how she felt.
Footsteps rushed toward them.
âThere a problem here?â A gruff, male voice demanded.
She turned her headâmanaged to pry her eyes away from Benâand saw a man in a security uniform side-eyeing them.
Ben stepped back. âNo problem, Tommy. Just taking a minute to let my lady know something very important.â He inclined his head to Courtney.
The security guard didnât back away. Courtney realized that while he may know Ben, the guard still wanted her reassurance. âIâm fine,â she told him quickly. âThank you.â
The guard took his time backing away.
Ben wasnât touching her anymore. She missed his touch.
âLetâs be very clear on something.â Benâs stare didnât waver. âIf I came into a room and found some jerk with his arms around you, Iâd be jealous.â
She shivered. âWeâre justâ¦â Her words trailed away. Friends?
Friends with benefits? Friends who had amazing sex?
He waited.
âWeâre not serious. OrâorâI mean, we havenât even said if weâre exclusive. We hooked up on Friday night.â It had just been a few days. Things were moving so crazy fast.
âIâm not going to fuck anyone else while Iâm with you.â His voice was a rough rasp. âAnd if you are planning to fuck someone elseââ
âIâm not.â Had he missed her six-month dry spell? She was pretty sure sheâd told him it had been six months.
