Chapter Thirteen
CRAIG STOPPED IN front of Britta’s house. “This is you,” he said in a low voice, turning his head to Jake and making his insides shudder. His voice was so manly Jake could spend all night listening to him talk.
“I loved tonight. I couldn’t be happier.” He’d said it with a silly, wide grin on his face. But he couldn’t avoid it. He was that happy.
Craig leaned in and kissed him and Jake’s dick again jumped to life. He moved back.
“You better go,” Jake said, the corner of his lips all the way up. “Someone is waking up downstairs and I can’t answer for him.”
Craig burst into laughter. “You address your dick as him? Do you also have a name for it?”
“Shut up.”
“Oh, my god. You totally do.”
“Even if I did, now I’m not telling you,” Jake said, crossing his arms.
“Maybe next time?” Craig winked.
“We’ll see about that.”
Jake got out of the car. The rain had stopped. He stood on the curb and watched Craig leave, waiting until his car’s red lights disappeared down the intersection. He sighed and turned around to go into the house. He didn’t want the night to end. He just wanted that happy feeling to linger for as long as possible.
An approaching shadow caught his eye. He turned his head instinctively and saw Hunter crossing the street in long strides. He was tall, at almost six feet three, and had no trouble walking really fast. Jake’s heart jumped and his stomach sank. He felt the blood fleeing from his face and a dull pain in his temples.
“Come with me. This has gone far enough,” Hunter simply said, cutting off Jake’s escape. His voice was determined and Jake noted a hint of anger in his squarish face. Hunter had always reminded him of a younger Jason Statham, on account of his solid frame.
“What are you doing here? Are you following me?” Jake asked, looking up at him. His voice had come out in a higher pitch than he’d intended.
Hunter sighed. “I’m getting really annoyed with all this bullshit, Jake. Just get in the car and let’s go. You’ve made me waste enough time as it is.”
The blood that had fled Jake’s face now surged to his cheeks. “I’m not going anywhere. Leave me alone.” Jake took a step forward, trying to get around Hunter, but he cut his path off again.
“Get in the car!” Hunter hissed, grabbing Jake’s forearm. His eyes were two menacing slits. Jake had forgotten how strong he was, but was now reminded of it.
Jake yanked his arm free. His heart pounded. He knew that look and was scared Hunter would do something crazy. He quickly scanned the dark street, searching for someone who could help him, but there was no one in sight. It was too late and Britta’s neighbors would probably already be fast asleep.
“Leave me alone!” His voice faltered. “I won’t go back with you, okay? Why do you think I ran from you in the first place? I wasn’t happy, Hunter!”
Hunter’s face contorted into a smirk.
