4. Focusing Device

I struggled with the idea of retaining influence but ceding control (not micromanaging) in the earlier part of my career. How do you know the team is headed in the right direction if you are not specifying every detail? It seemed a very hard question. Most people who struggle, or have struggled, to cede control will identify with this question. It’s important enough in business, but is critical in situations like a war. For this conundrum, the doctrine of maneuver warfare has a concept called a focusing device. Along with the missions, what is typically needed is an organizing idea that can focus the direction of the team while fulfilling the mission. A focusing device is not an yearly business plan, like the ones common in big enterprise environment. It is a clear business strategy. Does everyone within the company know what it takes to win in the marketplace that the company operates in? Do they know how their individual work contributes to their company winning in the marketplace?
