Chapter Twenty
Becka held the car door for Lee. “Let me help you with the seat belt.”
As Becka leaned across her, Lee could smell the slight perfumed scent of her hair. She closed her eyes and inhaled. What would Becka’s bare skin smell like? Shocked by the thought, she shook her head sharply.
“Are you all right?” Becka pulled back and peered at her.
“Um…yes…I’m fine.”
“How strong are those pills?”
“I guess I’m just tired.” She tried to remember when she had last eaten, but she was finding it difficult to think of anything other than how close Becka was standing to her.
Becka’s face softened. “Of course you are. Let’s get you home and tucked into bed.”
A jolt hit Lee’s core when she experienced a vision of Becka in her bed. She shook her head again.
Becka hurriedly closed the car door and ran to the other side. “Hang on. We’ll be there in a few minutes.” She cranked the car and slipped it into gear before squeezing Lee’s left hand. “Try to stay awake until we get there. I don’t think I could carry you in.”
Lee sat up and tried to look alert. “I’m fine.”
Becka was silent as she maneuvered the car out of the parking lot and through the edge of town to the main highway.
Lee tried to focus on the scenery that she had seen a thousand times, but the cotton balls in her head kept multiplying. The steady hum of the tires on the pavement became a counterpoint melody to her nodding.
“Are you and Melinda Thayer involved?”
Lee snapped awake. She hadn’t realized she had been dozing. “No.” The word sounded as though her head was in a barrel. She blinked her eyes and willed them to stay open. “Melinda is too aggressive.” She tried to turn her head to look at Becka. The wobbly movement reminded her of the action of having a super-zoom lens mounted on a too small tripod. She tried to hold onto the armrest on the door so she wouldn’t tip over, but it hurt too much.
“Does that mean you don’t like overly aggressive women?” Becka glanced at her.
“The right woman can be aggressive.”
“Is there a woman in your life now who could be that aggressive?”
Lee nodded heavily.
“Who?”
The voice was far away, but Lee ignored it. The sound of the tires on the pavement was so much nicer to hum along with. She tried to concentrate. She wasn’t humming. Someone else was.
“Who is the woman?” Becka asked.
Suddenly, a hand shook her good arm.
“Lee, stay awake and talk to me.”
She opened her eyes. The sound of the tires had stopped. She heard someone talking and turned to gaze at the woman beside her. There was something familiar about her, but Lee couldn’t clear the fog in her head enough to see the woman clearly. The woman’s mouth was moving. Lee focused all her attention on the mouth. It was a nice mouth, she decided as she reached out and touched it with her fingertips. It was soft and warm.
