Chapter 10

The hospital was not restful.

Everyone wanted me to do things. I wasn't certain who I should listen to. Two police people came along to see me, to hear everything I said to Officer Calendar. They had seemed friendly when we started but their smiles were false by the end, their eyes were hard. They thanked me but didn't mean it.

I was examined by a female doctor of some kind. Businesslike.

When they all finally left me alone to sleep it was too noisy. I was hungry, but said nothing.

Through what was left of the night, I watched the nurses come and go, checking my blood pressure. It had been high when I'd entered, but remained even since then.

Sandy, the nurse who checked on me, was very friendly and solicitous. As the sun was rising, she asked what I'd like for breakfast. When I asked for scrambled eggs and dry toast, she thought it over and gave a little bow, almost just a nod, saying she'd try. She patted my hand.

"How's the pain?" she wondered, already knowing my answer.

On a scale of one to ten, I was sticking with two. She knew and nodded.

If I had a knife in my gut, or a GSW, it would be a two. Sandy saw my recent wound and examined my face. Fortunately father had hit me on the better side. Both sides hurt.

I hadn't seen me.

"You've seen a lot of action recently," she said.

"Interesting times," I said.

Throwing her hands up, she shook her head dramatically and started to leave. She gave me a wink before vanishing.

"I'm sorry I didn't know, Rebecca," mama said.

I'd finished my eggs and orange juice. The toast was steamed and a bite was foul mush. I forced myself to swallow that much. Sandy had asked if Suzette could come in as she took the tray. Then she said she was leaving and wished me less interesting times.

"Mama, Suzette, there was nothing to know," I said.

Her face was stark, bleached and blotchy.

"Five times, Rebecca? How could I be so blind? I knew… I knew… there was something, but I had no clue."

"Six times now," I murmured. "It doesn't matter. I'm still a virgin. He always used my ass."

"Oh, Rebecca, that doesn't matter," she said. "But you'll be okay now. You'll be safe. Your father is going to jail. They'll hold him for evaluation and then decide if they'll prosecute."

"Oh, mama," I said, gazing at her. "Suzette, how are you?"

"I failed you," she said. "I wanted so much to be a perfect mother, to guide you, to learn your strengths and help you use them. I read so many books on parenting. But I failed you. This is why…"

She fell silent.

I held my hand out. She took it with both of hers. For a moment her eyes locked on our hands together, so I looked there. Our hands were similar, mine was a bit smoother, I guess, maybe youth showed. That wasn't what she looked at. Suzette saw her failure.

"The past is done," I said.
