Chapter Five

Beck took a deep breath even though the air was so cold it hurt his lungs. “It’s good to be out of the house.”

Roark arched a brow. “Cabin fever? You know you don’t have to stay in the warehouse, right?”

They were walking along the sidewalk of Gillham’s Main Street. Beck was on Roark’s left side, with Noel on his right, tucked against him. They were adorable, but Beck didn’t say it out loud. Roark would want revenge, and after the last time it had happened, Beck wasn’t ready to risk it. Being woken up in the middle of the night because someone threw a bucket of ice-cold water on your face was not fun.

“I know we don’t have to stay in. It’s easier, though.” No one knew where the council assassins lived apart from the council. Most of them only left the warehouse when they were sent on a mission, but Beck wasn’t one of them. He didn’t mind spending a lot of time behind his desk—as long as he could wear his pajamas to work—but he did need some fresh air sometimes.

He and Armand hadn’t gone on another date yet, but things were going well between them. Beck couldn’t deny he was in love with his mate, at least not to himself. He hadn’t told Armand yet because he was afraid he’d send him running. Things were going well, but that didn’t mean everything was perfect. Beck had no doubt Armand was still hesitant when it came to their relationship, and he still hadn’t opened up about his past. He did seem to have fewer nightmares since they’d started sharing a bed, and Beck didn’t mind being woken up when he did. He liked feeling like he was helping Armand, even if it was only in small ways.

“Still in the honeymoon phase, I see,” he said, pointedly looking at Roark’s arm around Noel.

“It’s only been a few months.”

Beck snorted. “As if time will make a difference. You’ll still be all lovey-dovey in thirty years.” Beck was sure of that. Not only did mates stay in love with each other until their deaths, but Roark and Noel just fit. He had no doubt they would have been together even if they hadn’t been mates. They’d found each other again after so many years, and to him, that was a clear sign they were destined to be together.

Which of course, they were.

The window of the shop they were passing by exploded. Beck jerked, glass flying all over him, Roark, and Noel, and cutting the exposed skin of their faces and hands. It hurt, but that pain faded to barely noticeable when something slammed into Beck’s shoulder. He yelled and fell to his knees, raising his hand. It was bloody when he looked at it. He didn’t know why, or how, and he didn’t care, not when he was gasping for breath.

The people on the street were screaming and running away. Beck tried to push himself up to do the same when pain flared in his ear.
