Grace took a shower and changed into a nightgown. When she came out, Liam was in her bed watching TV, flipping channels. He was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, and he looked very young—like a college boy in the dorms.

She smiled from the doorway, and he finally turned to her. “Hey, beautiful,” he said softly. “Come here.”

She walked slowly to him, and he grabbed her around the legs and pulled her into bed with him.

She giggled as his hands slid up her bare legs and grabbed her bare ass firmly.

“Liam,” she said, protesting, but not really, as his hands slid to her hips and his lips found hers.

She could faintly hear Suze Orman on the TV asking someone what they currently had in their retirement fund, and the person laughing and telling her she wouldn’t like the answer.

“Grace,” Liam replied, moving just a few inches back and studying her face with his eyes. “Do you know how much you mean to me?”

She wanted to believe him, but it frightened her to trust him again. Grace looked away, her hand rubbing his chest over his t-shirt. “I’m glad you came here,” she said.

“You didn’t answer my question,” he teased, his one hand grabbing her side and tickling her so that she shouted and moved away.

“Don’t tickle me, Liam.”

“Answer my question,” he said, grinning. “Do you know how much you mean to me?”

“I don’t,” Grace said.

Liam’s smile faded. “I know I’ve given some confusing signals.”

“I don’t blame you, though,” she told him. “It’s been a hard time.”

“I blame myself,” he retorted, stroking her cheek. “You deserve everything, Grace.”

“We’ve only just started to get to know each other.” She looked into his eyes. “I can’t deny what I feel when I’m with you—“

“I love you, Grace. You have to know that.”

She felt a pang of longing. “I want it to be true, Liam. And I think you do too. I think you want to be in love. Especially now…” her voice trailed off.

He pulled slightly away. “Especially now that my mother’s dead? You think that’s why I’m here, talking like this?”

She shook her head. “I don’t know what I think anymore. I just feel scared.”

He sighed. “It’s my fault that you’re scared, and I know that. I understand that I pushed you away. Losing my mother…I can’t begin to describe what that’s like. I’m still not sure I even really believe it myself. And when I first found out she died, I freaked out and I tried to just close everything down. I tried to be the big strong man and handle it all.”

Grace nodded. “I wanted to understand, and be patient. But when you left me alone without telling me when you’d be back, and then you came to my house drunk—“

“I remember what happened,” Liam told her. “I remember all of it.” His eyes were pained. “Including when I was drunk. The mess that I was and how you took care of me.” His voice caught in his throat. “If it wasn’t for you being there for me, I don’t think I’d be in the place I am right now.
