My feet pound the floor like I’ve got a personal vendetta against the imported Italian marble, one of my father’s favorite things about this chateau. The music burrows down deep into my bones. The base echoes in the hollow of my chest. I want to go back and wrap Harlow in my arms and hold her there until she forgives me. I want to fall to my knees at her altar and worship her existence. I would rip out my own heart to stop hers from bleeding, but she asked me to give her time, and I’m trying to be a better man. I’m trying to be more empathetic, to actually hear her concerns.

I don’t know if I can.

I don’t know if better is possible.

I am my father’s child after all.

But I won’t go down without a damned fight. I will try.

I jog down the hallway, bumping into a sophomore I recognize from Voclain. I don’t even stop moving as the kid goes sprawling onto the floor. Who the fuck are all these people, and why are they at my house?

It was fine when she was at my side, when she made everything else seem trivial and unworthy of my wrath. I am alone now, and if I’m being honest, a bit unhinged. I curl my fingers around the banister at the bottom of the staircase and spin in the opposite direction, the quickest way to my car. There are people fucking everywhere, in my way.

“Whoa, sorry, man,” Davenport says as he intersects my path from the kitchen, his giant arms wrapped around a squealing redhead.

I want to find the stereo system and rip it out of the wall to stop the music, but I don’t have time for that. Instead, as I pass the media room, I reach in and snatch the remote. I hit a couple buttons and the shit stops. Partygoers keep dancing for a moment as if their bodies haven’t figured out that I stopped the music.

A few of them look at me, probably expecting me to turn it back on. Paverson frowns at me from the sofa pushed against the far wall, some girl I don’t recognize on his lap and Fritz at his side, looking dazed and drunk as fuck. Everett sits next to Molly, and they look up from whatever they’ve been looking at on her phone, and Everett frowns. I don’t give him the chance to intervene. This isn’t an intervention. This is a cleansing of all the dead weight.

“Get the fuck out,” I bellow. “Party’s over.”

There’s a groan from somewhere behind me and murmured complaints. I stride straight through the den and into the sitting area. I am trying to get outside, away from these assholes. There’s only one thing I can do to make this right, and I will do it tonight.

I want these people gone. Harlow doesn’t need to watch her birthday party continue on without her.

I am about ten feet away from the front door when a hand grabs my shoulder.
