I only had a fleeting moment to react to Worthy’s sudden stop.

But my team’s extensive training made my response as fluid as if I’d been expecting it—when the point man knelt, I immediately closed the distance behind him, remaining standing as I took the high slot in the two-man stationary clearance maneuver. I angled my rifle around the corner in unison with Worthy, though not as far: my role was to clear right to left as the low man did the opposite.

Two enemy fighters began firing at once, ripping wild volleys of automatic rifle fire down the hallway at the first flash of our movement around the corner.

They were spaced on either side of the hall, but their premature reaction cost them their lives; neither had the training or composure to direct their shots at the edge of the wall that Worthy and I remained tucked against, little more than our right shoulders and a fraction of our heads exposed—and, of course, our rifles, which we put into play simultaneously.

Worthy’s target on the left was the first to die, his gunfire ending as he fell forward. By then I was already engaging the man on the right, ripping subsonic bullets above his tremendous muzzle flashes until they extinguished to reveal a still-standing corpse in jeans and a soccer jersey flooding with blood. An AKM rifle fell from his grasp as he dropped from sight.

I sidestepped right and moved down the opposite wall, slipping past the bodies and proceeding as the number one man before Worthy had time to rise and follow. It would be either him or Ian backing me up as I approached a door at the end of the hall where the firing continued, mercifully not at us, before identifying, almost too late, a T-intersection to my right. A side corridor, I guessed, and one that I’d nearly missed in my haste to reach the door ahead.

By then, transitioning my weapon to a left-handed shooting position to maximize the use of cover around the corner would have required me to slow and add precious time to an already-stalled assault, so I decided to overexpose myself instead, considering that the two men Worthy and I had just gunned down must have been a delaying force. The question remained, were there any others?

Lowering my rifle just before the corner to prevent flagging myself before the final commitment, I spun right and took aim down a short corridor, finding my sights aligned with a trembling man who stood not three paces ahead of me.

He was light-skinned but Middle Eastern in appearance, with the tufts of a premature goatee and a flop of curly hair slicked to his forehead by sweat—that detail stood out even before I recognized the wide-eyed terror on his face, and the overladen flak jacket wrapped around his torso. In what may well have been the fastest shots I’d ever taken in my life, I fired two rounds into the bridge of his nose.

He collapsed before me, and I momentarily considered leaping atop his body to smother the blast.
