Chapter 5

Beast

"Are you cold?" I asked with a worried look at Lucy, who sat trembling in a corner of the cave.

We had been on the run until nightfall. As it turned out, there was a long ravine between us and the route we had taken by jeep, and so we couldn't get back to the road. There was also a ravine in front of us, a rather wide one, which, as I knew, ran all the way to the forest. So if we didn't want to walk the way back, we needed to go to the jungle and from there to the village of the Jinggs, then from the village to the West Colony. Fortunately, I had stumbled over the cave which gave us shelter from the chilly rain that often fell in the steppe at night. The temperatures had dropped dramatically since sunset.

"A-a-a... a little," Lucy answered my question.

"I'll go out and find firewood so I can build us a fire," I said and kneeled down next to her to put her face between my hands. "I'll be right back."

"No!" she said and grabbed my wrist. "Don't... don’t leave me alone!"

"But we need wood for a fire. You'll freeze to death. My body can handle the temperature, but you..."

"I... I prefer to freeze... than being here... alone. – Please. – Don't leave me here alone."

I closed my eyes to think. I had to keep Lucy warm. Her face under my hands was already icy. The shock had also caused her body temperature to drop.

"At least let me cut some long grass that grows just outside the cave," I finally said. "Then we can lie on it and I can keep you warm."

"O-okay. – But only in front of the... the cave."

"You'll be fine. We'll be safe here. I don't think those guys are coming here. Not tonight anyway. Humans can't track, especially in the dark. – Do you trust me?"

She nodded before giving a weak "Yes."

"Good," I said. "I promise I will protect you. No matter what happens, I would rather die than let anyone lay a hand on you again."

Gently, I took her fingers off my wrist and squeezed them.

"I'll be right back."

I took off my long-sleeved shirt and handed it to Lucy.

"Put this on."

"But what about you?"

"I don't mind the temperature."

I saw her struggling with herself. She was freezing miserably and could use every bit of extra warmth.

"It's not up for discussion, Lucy. You're gonna put it on. – You need help with that? Or can you manage on your own?"

"I can do it," she said, sorting the shirt in her hands until she had it right side up and pulled it over her head. That her fingers were cold and she was shaking all over her body didn't make it any easier. I helped her with the sleeves.

"Th-Thank you."

"Okay. I'll see you soon."

I got up and left the cave to cut tufts of that long, soft grass with my knife and took them into the cave.
