Bear got Amira tucked in bed. She was an absolute sweetheart. When he turned around, Maxime was standing there.

“Where are your parents?”

The boy was hesitant to answer, but he finally did.

“My mum is probably with her aunt. She’s been sick for a long time, and Mum has been helping her.”

“Do you want us to wait with you until she gets back?”

The boy vehemently shook his head. “She goes down there all the time. She doesn’t like it when people are here.”

Bear was trying his best not to come across as the interrogator he was trained to be, but dammit, he was genuinely concerned about the kids. Some of the comments they made tonight had many scenarios going through his head, and none were good.

He was a trained protector. He’d spent eleven years of his SEAL career traveling all over the world. And in those eleven years, he had seen things he never wished he had, many being women and children who had been victimized.

He and Jocelyn got Maxime tucked in bed next to Amira. Bear thought it was sweet when Jocelyn kissed each child on the forehead. She seemed to be smitten with the youngsters. But he had to admit that he was too.

As the pair exited the property, Jocelyn grabbed his arm, stopping him. He looked at her and could tell she was upset.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, stepping closer and letting his hand slide down her arm. He was pleased when she didn’t try to move away from his touch.

She glanced back toward the hut where the two kids were nestled in their bed.

“I don’t want to leave them there alone. I feel like it’s irresponsible of us. I mean, they’re only ten and seven years old. Anyone could walk right in there, and…” her voice trailed off, but Bear understood. He didn’t like it either. However, he understood that things operated differently in certain parts of the world, like how people parent. It also depended on the culture.

“Joce, it’s not just you. I feel the same and believe me. I hate it too. However, we have to respect their culture. Judging from Maxime’s lack of concern about his mom not being there tells me they’re used to it.”

She went to argue, and he stopped her. He wasn’t even thinking when he took her hand and squeezed it until she looked down at their joined hands. He thought she might pull away, but she surprised him when she gripped his tighter.

Her body relaxed, and she brushed her hair out of her face before looking back up at him.

“I just don’t like it. I can’t help it. They are such nice kids. And I also don’t like how Maxime always panicked at his parents' mention. It was like he was scared. And what was with him asking if you guys would protect him and his sister?”

As serious as the situation was, Bear couldn’t hide his smile because she was cute as hell when she got worked up. He released her hand and grabbed onto her shoulders.
