12.

“Son, bring in some more snow for me.” I looked over when my dad whispered and saw that his cheeks were red and there was a sheen of sweat on his brow. I jumped up to do as he asked. I grabbed the pails by the front door and stepped out onto the porch in just my t-shirt and jeans.

In the few hours since I had come outside, the snow had risen up at least another foot, making it waist high in most places. The drifts were taller than me now. It didn’t seem like the snow would let up anytime soon and I wished that my father would let me go into town alone to find help for him. I firmed my resolve to convince him that it was a good idea and wondered if I should just wait until he was sleeping and go anyway.

Once I had scooped snow into both pails, I turned and hurried back into the warmth of the house. The fire was burning high, so the room wasn’t chilly at all, but when I looked over I could see my father’s body shaking.

“It’s time for some more Tylenol, Dad,” I told him as I set the pails down beside his bed. I picked up one of the kitchen towels we had been using and spread it out on the bed. I put two handfuls of snow in the middle and then folded it to keep the snow inside before I laid the cold compress on his brow. I did the same with three other towels, putting one under his neck and in each armpit to try and bring down his fever.

“Okay, son,” Dad whispered, his eyes never opening to look at me.

Once I had the medicine ready, I held the glass for my dad to sip from to wash the pills down. Just that little bit of effort had him out of breath and that made my decision to find my way to help as soon as he fell asleep.

“Brawley Dumont, I can tell you’re plotting and I’m not going to say again that it’s too dangerous for you to go into town. Even if you got there safely, there’s no way anyone will come all this way for me.”

“I could take you with me on the litter we use for wood. I’m strong enough,” I told him again.

“I know you’re strong, Brawley Bear. I need to talk to you, son. Serious now.” Dad’s eyes opened and he stared at me, more focused than he’d been in two days. “Just in case something does happen to me, that black box in the bottom drawer of my dresser has all the documents you’ll need to take care of things when I’m gone. Call your uncle and he’ll come get you.”

“Dad, just let me go get help!”

“Hush, boy. I want to be cremated and put in the urn with your mama. Then, when you go home with your Uncle Roy, set us free together out in the canyon.
