The best part about having Bear’s friends around—beyond the obvious—was that they told stories about Bear during lunch. Mostly about when they were all growing up together, but some were about Bear’s time as a Ranger. Gabe had served with him in the same unit so he had the most to say. It became pretty clear to Ellie that Gabe looked up to his friend and that Bear didn’t even realize it.

“He saved my life, Ellie,” Gabe said.

But instead of looking pleased, Bear actually looked ashamed. “Had I been faster, you wouldn’t have been injured at all,” he murmured.

Gabe tilted his head and turned to Ben. “Did he say what I thought he said?”

“He said he wasn’t fast enough and that you still got injured.” Ben had raised his voice and suddenly Ellie realized Gabe was hard of hearing.

“We’ve been over this, dude.” Gabe frowned as he looked at Bear. “You. Saved. My. Life.” Ellie’s suspicions about Gabe’s hearing were confirmed when Gabe signed each word as he said it. Then he added, “You’re my brother, always.”

Bear waved him off and walked into the cabin as he mumbled again, something about needing to get back to work. Ellie’s heart fell. These men so obviously cared for Bear and he wouldn’t let himself feel it.

Gabe shook his head. “Stubborn fool.” He got up and went in the opposite direction toward the trucks.

“Bossy, too,” Ellie added.

Ben chuckled. “Truth, Ellie.”

“Is that why he won’t stay here?” she asked quietly. “He feels guilty?”

Ben shrugged. “Hard to say. That man plays his cards close to the vest.”

“Too close,” Waylon added, giving Ellie a sweet smile. “And one day, he’s going to regret it if he isn’t careful.”
