Chapter 19

Ingrid had spent the day investigating the employment agencies that worked with nurses. She had to be selective because she didn’t just want high pay. She needed flexibility first and foremost.

She was worried she wouldn’t find anything at all, and when she went to gather the kids from school, agitation filled her. She knew finding a good place to work took time, but she didn’t have time. The pressures were huge, and it was taking a toll on her. She had been a good person for most of her life. Why was it so hard for her to find something good? How did other people make life seem so easy? It was like she had to fight for everything.

At least the weather was good, she thought as she stood on the sidewalk outside the school. A few parents were early like her, but more people showed close to the dismissal bell.

“Hey, Ingrid,” a woman called out, and she turned to see Suzi coming her way. “It’s good to see you again.”

Ingrid smiled, actually happy to see the woman. “Hi, it’s Suzi, right?”

The woman laughed. “Yes, you remembered. How are you doing?”

She shrugged. “I’m looking for work, so not great. Do you know anyone who is hiring a nurse?"

Suzi narrowed her gaze and then nodded. “Wow, it's totally a coincidence that we met, but talk about perfect timing. It’s not glamorous, but my neighbor is older, and his practice is for people who aren’t young. His nurses keep quitting on him because they find younger doctors who will be in business in ten years.”

“Really?” Ingrid said. “And he’s hiring?”

She nodded. “Hold on and let me call him. He’s a really great guy. He lives in this neighborhood because his grandchildren live close.”

Her stomach twisted. She wanted this but felt like she was imposing. “Oh, I feel weird making you call him now.”

“Don’t. I’m friendly with his wife, though they are older. We developed a great relationship. When one of the kids is sick and I have to work, she watches them. I make her bread twice a month and some other treats. We also take care of their cats when they travel, so we’re friendly.” Suzi got a far-off look in her eyes, and Ingrid could tell the phone had been answered. “Yes, Phillip, it’s me. I know I don’t usually call you during the workday, but one of the mothers who has kids in school with mine is a nurse…yes, sure. I’ll tell her.”

The call ended just as the first release bell rang. Ingrid glanced toward the school, wondering if this was for real.

“I’m going to text you his office address. You can go by tomorrow morning after you drop the kids off here. It’s just around the corner. He said eight-fifteen. Will that work for you?”

“Really?” Ingrid couldn’t believe she was this lucky to find a doctor who worked so close to Bear’s house and the school.

Suzi chuckled. “Yes, really. He says he can’t make any promises, but he’s willing to interview you.
