Bear
I stood in that doorway, the life sucked out of me. It couldn’t be. She was here, just a few feet away from me. How? Why?
“Are you going to stand there all day, Brother. Come in and say hello.”
Nick grinned and beckoned me in, but my feet were firmly planted, and I wasn’t going anywhere for the moment. Her brown hair cascaded down her back and she slightly tilted her head to the side. I focused on her reflection in the window. She was as beautiful as I remembered her. That bright smile of hers that once lit up the room, was long gone. In its place was a grim sadness that mirrored my own. My traitorous heart still beat for this woman. I wasn’t supposed to feel anything for her. Hatred should have poured out of my soul, but instead a yearning so deep stole my breath away.
“Bear!” Nick’s voice startled me out of my stupor and blankly, I nodded, still staring at the woman seated before me. She hadn’t dared looked back at me yet, had she forgotten my name. Slowly, I strode into the room, walking around her, the scent of oranges made my nostrils flare and memories of her soft curves flooded my head.
“Meghan?” My voice sounded torn and the sound of my voice made her turn to me. Those rich coffee brown eyes staring back at me made me falter, and I gripped the desk for a minute. Those deep brown eyes that held so much hope so long ago, now only held secrets. Secrets and lies that women tell a man to make them fall in love so hard, they’d never love another woman again. And I swore to myself I’d never put my heart through that misery, not ever. So why was it betraying me even now. Even after everything she’d done to it.
“Derek,” her voice wavered as she said my name, as if it were painful to recall it. The same apprehension that was running through me, was now running through her. The rays of sunlight pouring in from the small window, highlighted her chocolate brown waves that glimmered with red tones. That sad longing was present between us and we simply stood there, quietly taking each other in.
“The years have been good to you, Meg.”
“You too, Derek.” That wispy tone coated her words and I could tell she had more to say but didn’t dare voice it.
I clenched my fists to my sides to keep myself from holding her in my arms again. I shook the feeling away and replaced it with those feelings of resentment I knew so well.
“I thought you were dead.”
She stared at me, long and hard, before giving me any type of response. “I wanted to be,” she murmured, just loud enough for me to hear.
Nick glanced at me, then back at her, and suddenly a light clicked in his eyes. “Is this…is this, Meg?”
My silence was heavier than an answer. I wasn’t about to get into a conversation with Nick about how this was the woman I’d spent the last ten years thinking of.
