About ten years ago I bought a brand-new house. It was perfect—but I was constantly trying to keep it perfect. If a scuff mark appeared on a wall, I had the paint on hand to fix it. I was constantly touching up the risers on the staircase and cleaning and fixing the little things that happen over time. It consumed me and I was miserable because it's impossible to keep up with. I hired a cleaning person to help me and I spent every weekend being obsessed instead of having fun! But I've learned. Recently I bought a 166-year-old house with so many dings and dents that I can't let them bother me. I have also bought a used car that already has a ding or two so that I don't get obsessed with trying to keep it perfect. I keep the house and the car looking nice, but I can't make them perfect, so I don't get obsessed. I'm much happier now.
