Exchange regularly and find out where something can be improved. After all, what use is an engineer the most beautiful design if it can not be implemented in manufacturing? However, it is important to have a relationship of trust with the employees and that is more likely in a personal conversation in a quiet atmosphere instead of over the phone and eMail build up.
If the relationship of trust is missing, then many employees prefer to keep criticism and suggestions for improvement out of fear of sanctions or ideation. Therefore, make sure that everyone in your department is free to express unconventional ideas and take the suggestions seriously, even if you do not initially fit into your usual way of thinking.
That you probably do not have time for all your employees' concerns is understandable, but not a hindrance: Make sure you have a professional idea management system - for example, with an ideas database that everyone has access to and in which everyone can name their suggestions for improvement. The idea generator must be clearly recognizable for everyone afterwards. Additionally, reward the ideas that motivate.
This does not always have to be cash bonuses for implemented proposals. Appreciation can be enough: After two weeks, give feedback to the idea generator what will become of the idea. When the idea evolves into a visible change, the before-and-after state can be captured as a photo and publicly posted - with the name of the creative director below. Christopher Lohmann, CEO of Gothaer Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG says:
"You have to remove the grains of sand in the gearbox. The ideas of our employees are not ingenious, but small changes that make their work easier. Improved, which has always annoyed us. For example, the claims processors have recently been fishing out of electronic folders for letters addressed to them instead of having to dig through dozens of emails.
