The guests by the pool were too preoccupied with the naked women to notice me duck behind a row of tall bushes on the side of the house. Before reaching for the door, I glanced up to make sure the Vultore weren’t peering over the edge of the roof. The thought gave me the creeps.

As I gripped the handle, I reconsidered opening it. I figured one of three things would happen—the door would be locked, I’d find a room with a bunch of men grinding away at their party favors, or the rest of the Vultore would be inside. By the look of that waiter’s face, I doubted I’d find an orgy going on behind that door.

Jackson was going to kill me. But all I planned to do was take a peek to confirm that they were in there. Then I’d know exactly where to find them when I figured out how to destroy them. I’d be back at the party before anyone missed me.

The door was unlocked, which made my knees go a little weak. I slipped inside and closed it as quietly as possible. The entryway was dark, but a slight glow coming from the top of the stairs kept me from tripping over the bottom step. I took my pumps off and left them by the door before heading up the first flight, praying the old wood wouldn’t give me away. If the Vultore had hearing as keen as the dragon’s, and I suspected they did, they’d notice the slightest creak.

Halfway up, I listened for sounds. I heard nothing, which ruled out an orgy on the upper floors. When I reached the top, I stifled a shriek as I stepped in something wet. My bare foot was covered in blood. That tear in the waiter’s black pants came to mind.

With my back to the wall, I listened for a few seconds to see if they’d heard me. The shriek had barely made it out of my mouth, but it was enough to sound the alarm if they were within hearing range. Other than the muffled sounds of the party through the walls, it was dead quiet.

Deciding it was too risky, I turned to leave, but I heard the door at the bottom of the stairs open. I darted out of the dim light and waited at the bottom of the second flight to listen for footsteps. Whoever it was must have turned around and gone back out, because the staircase was empty when I peeked over the railing. It must have been one of the men by the pool realizing he’d used the wrong door.

I noticed a hallway to my right and decided to keep looking around. The second floor looked deserted. I glanced in all the rooms. No furniture, no drapes on the windows—they were just a bunch of empty rooms.

The stairs leading up to the third floor stopped at a door. There was no hallway, just a closed door. With my ear pressed against the wood, I listened for movement on the other side.
