The diligent inspector had continued to shadow him from the cemetery down to the lower road. He’d waited in his car for a short while before following the bus around the bay where it stopped outside the Maximilian Hotel. He pulled over onto the verge a short distance by the bus stop and gazed into his rear view mirror. Without bothering to turn off the ignition he sat and carefully observed his suspect, again studying his body language as he had patiently done for most of the afternoon. He saw him alight the bus appearing much distressed as he shuffled down to the hotel’s entrance, his face strained and lost in thought, his shoulders hunched over like those of a wretched beast of burden.

What was it about this curious Englishman? he pondered. The inspector had spent the latter part of the morning metaphorically sniffing around the private grounds of the Machiavelli mansion, scratching at the surface, trying to tempt providence to throw him the bones of a clue in order to justify his own grim conjecture. So far he’d found no irrefutable evidence to back it up but was far from satisfied, that bloodhound nose of his having detected a scent all too familiar, the smell of trouble.

Yesterday, he’d merely mentioned the Machiavelli estate as a matter of course but then had done so again intentionally, trying to provoke a reaction by calling the Englishman’s bluff. Which indeed is exactly what he’d reaped, triggering some kind of alarm bell in the guy’s head.

Of course, he had no idea of the connection between this man and the Machiavelli family but something was definitely awry. Beneath the pinnacle his men had searched half the day and half the night looking for a corpse that didn’t exist, the suicide, which it would now appear to be nothing more than a figment of this crazy man’s imagination. The inspector was now inclined to believe that he’d been stabbing in the dark and it was more likely that his sergeant had surmised correctly after all. Enough of this nonsense! He decided. They’d all been looking in the wrong place. No more of this pretence, it was time to take a proper look inside the property, above the crag!

He drove on towards Malcesine, heading directly for the town hall where he wanted to procure a search warrant, as was his prerogative to do so at this late hour of the day. In due course he intended to take a good look around inside the old house itself. But now of course, he was looking for something quite different altogether.
