MARGE AND HARRY MCKAY MOVED INTO THE HOUSE down the block from us, and we hit it off almost immediately. Harry was of medium height, well built, with salt-and-pepper hair, deep blue eyes and a matching full beard and mustache, which, taken all together, made him look like a college professor. He was actually a CPA, and the professorial look probably gave his clients lots of reassurance, even when faced with a tax audit.
Marge was short, pretty in a June Cleaver sort of way, with deep auburn hair that probably had help from Lady Clairol and an open, friendly face that caught my attention when we crashed carts in the supermarket. My husband, Dan, who was with me at the time, said she looked comfortably sexy, whatever that meant.
We had them over for dinner a few days later and they quickly returned the favor. We got very close, very quickly, and within a few weeks it was as though weâd been friends forever.
One evening about a month after we met, our relationship changed. It was warm midsummer twilight and we were sitting in the McKaysâ backyard, having finished a great barbecue dinner. I was working on my third beer and feeling quite mellow when Harry asked me, âHave you and Dan ever played with another couple?â
My eyes snapped opened. âNo.â I was shocked that Harry could even ask. âOf course not.â
Dan got defensive. âDonât be silly. Weâve been totally monogamous for all our married life.â
âThatâs a shame,â Marge said, patting Danâs hand across the redwood table. âSo boring.â
I hadnât even suspected that these nice, rather ordinary folks might have done anything that outrageous. âDo you mean youâve, well, cheated?â I asked.
âNot at all,â Harry said, his expression surprised. âWeâve never done anything that the other didnât know all about in advance.â He took Margeâs other hand. âMarge and I have a totally open relationship.â His wife nodded in agreement.
âIâve heard all about that. Swinging, other partners. I couldnât do that to Paula.â Dan slid his hand from beneath Margeâs, took mine and squeezed. âI love her too much to risk our relationship.â
âSure, weâve had other partners,â Harry said, âbut Iâve never done anything behind Margeâs back, never lied to her. We know several other couples, friends of ours, who enjoy having sex more, well, letâs say more freely, than many. I was just wondering whether you two might want to consider being with us like that some evening.â He leaned over and talked directly to me. âI find you quite attractive, and I know Marge has said the same about Dan.â
âYou mean youâve talked about usâthat way?â I pictured them discussing our sex life over coffee or in bed. The idea didnât sit well at all.
âSure. Why not? Weâre all adults. Do you mean you never had sexual thoughts about us?â
âOf course not.â Actually I had. Harry was not handsome, but his charm made him desirable. I had fallen asleep several evenings wondering what he might be like in bed.
âLiar,â Marge said, laughing.
