Cyrus shook his head at his nephew’s dumbfounded look. The kid was rock-solid average at most things, but you’d think he’d have figured out they didn’t need to haul two ’Mechs into the deep woods to “check things out.” A nice day trip in their beat-to-heck skimmer would have used about twenty times less fuel. Oh well, he’d recover.

The main garage loomed ahead, its half-dozen bay doors wide open, revealing the flash of welders and emitting the whir-barks of pneumatic drills. Cyrus eased the transport to a stop and popped his door open.

A thin, grizzled man with a low-tech prosthetic eye and a scar cutting across his graying hair looked up from the two-meter-wide circular saw blade he was sharpening. He squinted, cocked his head to the side and said, “Cyrus?”

“Yep, Morph, it’s me.”

“Wait, you know this guy?” Tib shouted, falling from the open driver’s side door of the transport.

Cyrus didn’t bother turning around. “We went to school together.” To Morph, he said, “Me and the kid here want in on the action. You got any openings?”

Morph clicked off his handheld grinder and sat back on his heels. “You got some kind of ESP, Cyrus?”

“No. Why?”

“’Cause the challenger in tonight’s main event just canceled.”

Cyrus stood for a few seconds, nodding.

When was it the right time? When it was.

He turned to Tib.

“You in, kid?”
