He was counting on fear of the unknown to bluff the guild into backing off. If he was lucky, the old assassin would have removed the note before the orb, and done so alone. In which case, the note, the orb, and the elf would have been destroyed. If the new boss couldn’t figure out how exactly Max had killed his master, that might worry them enough to make them cautious.

“How long before they are likely to respond?” Max asked Cavariel.

“Assuming the new Grandmaster steps in immediately, a few days, I would think. Longer if they need to summon the assassins they plan to send from somewhere else. This delay is likely, as they’ll want to send more experienced operatives this time, and those aren’t likely to be sitting around the guild lounge playing cards. The delay will be much longer if they don’t try to use the portals again, and travel here by foot.”

Max grinned. They had brought Master Spellslinger and his assistants back to install another upgrade. This time it was a ward across the surface of each portal, and each physical gate. It was keyed to the citizen’s oath, and further designed to interrupt stealth abilities. Guards at each location would be stopping and inspecting anyone who activated the ward. It would slow the progress of merchants coming through for trade, but had a high probability of exposing stealthed assassins trying to sneak in to murder him.

Max had taken to wearing his armor all the time now, except when sleeping. Redmane had insisted that he have a full-time escort of four guards everywhere he went. The dwarf had even tried to station them in his bedroom as he slept, but that was where Max had drawn the line. Instead they were stationed in his sitting room, just outside the closed door of his bedroom, and he agreed to allow them to sweep the room before he went to sleep. As there were no other doors or windows to that room, Redmane had capitulated.

Max was still annoyed by the constant company - even now, his four guards stood near the door of the restaurant, two outside, two inside, ever vigilant, but he understood the necessity.

Max raised another toast. “To things that go boom in the night!”

The others grinned and raised their mugs again, the three corporals shouting, “Boom!” in unison as they slammed the mugs down on the table, sloshing ale everywhere.
