Ulf and Dr Fielding went into her workroom. ‘Have a look through the microscope,’ Dr Fielding said.

Ulf stepped to the table and looked down the microscope’s eyepiece. He could see floating golden hexagonal shapes.

‘That’s the golden liquid magnified, Ulf. The hexagonal shapes are cells from a phoenix.’

‘From a phoenix?’

‘They’re phoenix tears, Ulf. I’m certain that’s what this is. The tears of phoenixes were once used in potions on account of their life-giving properties. It would explain the change in the ghosts.’

Ulf was looking down the microscope, fascinated by the golden cells. New ones kept popping up in the solution, appearing as if from nowhere.

‘What you can see are spontaneous stem cells coming to life, Ulf. They’re unique in all of science. They’re what enable phoenixes to regenerate their bodies and live many lifetimes, turning to flames then rising again from the ashes.’

Each tiny cell seemed to be bursting with energy, as if the golden liquid had a life of its own. ‘It’s weird,’ Ulf said, looking up.

‘A long time ago, people used phoenix tears to make themselves live longer or even bring themselves back from the brink of death,’ Dr Fielding continued. She picked up a sample test tube from the rack. ‘I’m surprised that the royal family would have used them, though.’

‘How come?’ Ulf asked.

‘Because phoenix tears were obtained by cruelty, Ulf; the birds were made to cry.’

‘The poor things,’ Ulf said.

‘The wild phoenix population didn’t fully recover until Professor Farraway’s time. The Professor set up a repopulation program, generating a colony of wild phoenixes from the DNA of just one bird.’

Ulf thought for a moment. He half-remembered having seen a picture of a phoenix somewhere at Farraway Hall. ‘Was it a golden phoenix, Dr Fielding?’ he asked.

‘That’s right, Ulf. The Professor had a Golden Fork-tailed Phoenix. It perched at Farraway Hall.’

She removed the glass slide from under the microscope and sat on the edge of the table. ‘Well, it looks like we’re finally getting on top of things here. The spectre’s back safely and we know what this potion is now. I’m sure by tomorrow we’ll have worked out where it came from.’

‘By tomorrow?’ Ulf asked.

‘I’d like us to stay here tonight. It’ll give me a chance to monitor how the living ghosts are adjusting to their bodies. I’ll ask Zazz to fix us some beds. You can have the room Professor Farraway used to stay in, if you like.’

‘Great,’ Ulf said, excited. He couldn’t wait to tell Tiana they were staying the night in the haunted castle. He crossed to the door. ‘Dr Fielding, I think the ghosts like having their bodies back. They seem quite happy about it.’

‘That’s how it seems to me, too,’ Dr Fielding replied. ‘It must be exciting to have a second chance at life.’
