When you first put on your snowshoes, walk in a straight line to make sure your stride is comfortable and the snowshoes can move freely.

While stepping forward, plant the pole that is opposite to your front foot. Your pole plant should strike just after you place your front foot and begin transferring your weight. This counterbalancing will keep you upright and in control.

Sidestepping

Sometimes you need to move around an object that is in your way. You can do this by sidestepping. Pick up the leg on the side to which you are moving to a height just above the snow, move it sideways, then firmly plant it. Pick up the other snowshoe and bring it over next to the first one you moved. Voila!
