Day 7 Dinner

Not at all happy that she was still assigned full-time to the kitchen, though prepared to keep working her way through it, Avalon asked Chef, “Any chance I’ll ever get out of here?”

He laughed. “Next supply run, we’re supposed to have a couple guys coming in to help me.”

“Oh, good,” she said, with a beaming smile. “It’s just not what I came for, you know?”

“Oh, I get it.” Chef gave her a cheeky grin. “As much as I appreciate the help, I understand you not wanting to stay in the kitchen.”

She shrugged. “It seems, once you’re in a kitchen, it’s hard to get out.”

He shook his head. “That’s not true,” he murmured. “It’s got nothing to do with it.”

“Maybe not, but it sure feels that way.”

He just dismissed it, but she didn’t feel as if he was dismissing her, and there was a big difference. By the time she had everything prepped and was putting dinner out, she looked around to see a steady stream of people coming in. By now she knew everybody by name, and, as long as nobody made any crass remarks about poisoning or raised any dissent, she got along with almost everyone. She had served up the first half and was waiting for the second half to show up. When nobody did, she looked back at Chef. “Do we have a group still out?”

He frowned, as he looked around. “Maybe.” He stepped into the back and picked up his phone. When he came back out a few minutes later, he nodded. “One group was due back twenty minutes ago, and they’re late.”

“But not problematically late, right?” she asked hesitantly.

He looked at her a bit too pointedly. “Not that I know of.”

She had to be satisfied with that, though she wasn’t. When Barret came in a little bit later, she looked up and asked, “Any word on the other group?”

He frowned. “I didn’t realize we were missing a group.”

“Where have you been?” she asked lightly. “We’re waiting for them to serve dinner.”

“No, as far as I know, everybody due back was in already.”

“The other team is just on the late side.”

“A little late is to be expected out here.”

“Fine.” Avalon stared at the food, frowning.

“If you have to put it away, you have to put it away,” Barret stated.

“Yeah, and, in this place, we know only so many people are here. Plus we don’t want any of them going without food, so I’d just as soon give them a few more minutes to get in.”

Only a few moments later, caterwauling could be heard outside, and she smiled. “Seems they’re back.”

“Good,” Barret replied, as he turned and looked around. “I would hate to think we had any more bad news waiting for us.”

“You and me both,” she agreed. He glanced at her sharply, and she shrugged. “Everything’s fine, as far as I know.”

“I’m glad to hear it,” he replied. “And how about you? Nobody else getting ugly?”

“No. It seems maybe the word got out that you’ll be there as my backup—in case anybody decides to get shitty.
