Chapter Four

As the spring moved towards the summer, Ash was a frequent visitor to Maple Hill. There had always been a deal of coming and going between the two households, and although the three men had new reason to visit each other, noone in Arisaig thought it peculiar that Ash was there so often.

Sometimes Ash would call, as he always had, to be sociable, or to ask for advice on farming matters, or to trade supplies and home-made products. At other times Seth and Dougal would take him in hand and fuck him senseless. While the couple’s bed was warm and comfortable, Ash preferred the barn, face down in the sweet-scented hay being plowed by Seth, or Dougal, or both in turn, lying on his back being ridden, sucking and being sucked, With his friends, Ash explored a hundred variations. After that spring, for the rest of his life, the smell of hay could get Ash hard.

Seth and Dougal taught Ash things he would never have learned from a lifetime of being with Robbie. He learned to ask for what he wanted, learned how to please a lover and how to be pleased. It was like a dance, working best when the players matched their steps, in harmony with each other. He started to realize that, even though he had sincerely loved Robbie, he and Robbie had never had, perhaps never could have had, that harmony.

After a few weeks, Robbie Buchanan had become a mere memory for him, someone he saw in church on Sunday, someone with whom he had shared some pleasant times with but had now grown away from. At church they would nod politely and even shake hands, and Ash would always have a smile for Fiona, glowing with her advanced pregnancy. If Robbie looked after him with yearning, Ash never noticed.

In May, Ash’s great uncle had died and left his house in Philadelphia to Sarah, the only surviving child of his favorite sister. When his mother broached the subject of leaving Arisaig, of going to Philadelphia to live, Ash was surprised, but not displeased by the thought.

“I have always hoped you would extend your education,” said Sarah over supper. “You could read arts, or even medicine.” Sarah had always wanted more for her son than to be a farmer, however much she had loved her husband and respected his choices.

Ash swallowed his food. “You want me to be a doctor?”

“Why not? You are intuitive with the animals, and when Malcolm cut his arm to the bone, Dr Cameron said it was thanks to your quick thinking and care that he did not bleed to death before the good doctor got here. You’re patient and gentle as well, my son,” she added with a fond smile at him. “Perhaps a little too gentle sometimes.”

He grinned at her and continued eating. Accustomed to bearing the burden of conversation, as Ash’s father had been as taciturn as he was, Sarah continued blithely.

“I would also like to see you have more choice of companions.
