On the Right Track with Nutrition
Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.
—Doug Larson
Michael Sandler is not a registered dietitian. Advice given here is gleaned from the athletic world’s experts on sports nutrition and Michael's professional athletic experience. As with all medical advice, consult your doctor before making any changes in your diet.
Whether in a shoe or out, staying properly fueled is important for your runs, and when you’re barefoot, it’s even more important. Because when you’re barefoot, you’re going to be able to run farther, and likely faster, than ever before. You’ll find yourself in new situations, new places, and with new abilities that demand proper fuel.
Perhaps you’ll dare to run a 10K, marathon, or even an ultra. Or maybe you’ll spend hours and hours trekking through the woods. Maybe you’ll increase your mileage, or simply become a regular runner.
But to grow strong and healthy, to become the best barefoot runner you can be, or simply to succeed in participating, or winning whatever it is you do (using your own definition of success), you must be well fueled.
Although barefoot running is easier on your joints, it’s a much harder workout than traditional running, at least in the beginning. Your body must adapt and grow stronger, from your muscles, to your tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bones, your core, your heart, and lungs. Everything must pick up the slack and do for you what your shoes once did.
In this chapter we’ll look at what you need to know about nutrition to get you started on this journey and to keep you going and growing strong.
