Notes on the Present Translation of Isaac Brassardâs Tale of Mr. Brassardâs Captivity in Algiers
Isaac Brassardâs narrative has survived as a printed version in a nineteenth-century scholarly journal, upon which this translation is based: Isaac Brassard, âRelation de la captivité de M. Brassard à Alger,â ed. H. de France, Bulletin de la Société de Histoire du Protestantisme Français 27 (1878): 349â55.
According to the nineteenth-century editor, Henri de France, the original handwritten narrative covered three pages and was written in a very regular hand. The document may have been penned by Brassard himself or may have been dictated to one of his sons. One of his descendants submitted Brassardâs account to the editor Henri de France as a testimony to the religious steadfastness of his ancestor.3 Brassardâs captivity narrative proper has been translated in its entirety in this volume. Special thanks go to Renaud Tschirner for his assistance with clarifying cases of doubt with regard to the antiquated French.
