Chapter 35

Concocting a real pill

Seeing the little fox covered with cuts and lying a puddle of blood, Li Wei’s heart sunk to his stomach. He hadn’t been frightened when he’d hung between life and death a few minutes ago, but right now he shivered in fear.

Thoughts of death permeated his mind, and he shivered with doubt. What if she was dead?

In the bright daylight, Wei carefully observed her illuminated cuts. The more he saw, the deeper his heart sunk into the endless abyss of dread. Blood leaked from the cuts, merging with the gray, lifeless soil.

Grabbing the scarred wooden bench for support, Wei tried to get up, but his legs shook and he fell down. The mother fox had trusted him with her safety, and he had failed her big time. Emotions choked his heart, and he couldn’t breathe for a moment.

“Junior apprentice brother, are you all, right?” Chen Du pulled out a bottle of some weird fragrance and rubbed it on his neck and hands.

Wei scowled. That bottle of perfume smelled irritating, and he had the urge to smash it against the wall. “Is there anyone here besides us?”

“No,” Chen Du said in a serious tone. “It doesn’t look like snake bites. Something sharp sliced through her skin. Check her pulse, she might be alive.”

Wei crawled over to her, but he couldn’t steady his shivering hand.

“Let me do it.” Chen Du squatted next to Wei, sweat pouring down his forehead, his face devoid of any color. “Look at her wounds. The poisonous air has already charred them, so it must have happened at least an hour back.”

Wei’s chin jut up. That was approximately when she’d fed him the Ice Reincarnation Fruit. Did something happen to her after that? But how was that possible? Who could come here and hurt a cute little fox like her? This was insanity. Only a beast would hurt a cute little fox like her.

Chen Du touched her neck. “She is alive.”

His soft voice sounded like heaven’s music. Like a dam holding them back had broken, his emotions surged toward her along with his divine sense. She was indeed alive. Half-dead, but still alive.

Wei’s shoulders eased, but guilt occupied his mind. How could he have missed her peril with his divine sense? He couldn’t even check her pulse. What had happened to him? Was he too weak to see someone close to him dying in front of him?

The choking emotions he felt were odd and strange. Even when his grandfather died, he hadn’t felt this down.

“Senior apprentice brother Du, do you have a healing pill on you?”

Chen Du shook his head. “It won’t work. Humans and beasts are different. Wait, I know a pill recipe that might help her. I also have ingredients for the basic version of it. But that recipe is only for common animals or Ferocious Beasts in the early Refinement Realm. Is your pet a Ferocious Beast?”

Wei nodded. She was Spirit Beast, of course, not a Ferocious Beast. But he didn’t want Chen Du to know that.
