I’m hesitant to leave Carmen, but she doesn’t protest and Nik seems to be telling me with his calm gaze to trust him. I half expect the words to fill my head with his voice again, but they only come in the form of a wary expression. I’m getting the feeling that I’m missing some vital pieces of information if Carmen would be so willing to stay with Finn. Stay with the person who is the reason we’re in this mess.

I don’t know what happened on their journey here or what things were said or done, so I have no choice but to let them see their plan through.

I hug Carmen quickly before taking Nik’s hand and following Gracyn back below the deck and down the narrow hall.

Gracyn doesn’t say a word to me, and returns to being my silent guard, though Renshaw wants to claim we are his guests now. Gracyn gestures through the open doorway to his own quarters. “I’ll bring the others here when their meetings with Captain Renshaw are complete,” he says, and closes the door behind us.

I pause, waiting for the click of a key to deem us as true prisoners, but it never comes.

“How in the world did you find me?” I ask.

Nik turns to face me, his blue eyes dark and swelling like the waves outside, a sense of clarity coming over them that I only briefly glimpsed on the deck above before he went back to playing his role in his conversation with Renshaw.

“Tell me everything I’ve missed,” I add.

Nik’s eyes sweep across my face before stopping at my lips. “I will in just a second,” he breathes and steps forward, dipping his chin and pressing a strong kiss to my lips.

My heart instantly jumps into my throat and I lean into him, kissing him back and looping my arms around his neck.

His hand comes up to cup my cheek, lightly holding me like a glass heart that could shatter, like I simply can’t be real.

I pull myself into his chest, wanting him to feel how very real I am. It’s over. We aren’t apart anymore. He found me.

Nik breaks the kiss first, pulling back slightly and pressing his forehead to mine. “You have no idea how many times I feared I’d never get to do that again.”

My breath catches against my racing heart, knowing I had feared the same. “I don’t know how you did it,” I breathe.

“We had some help from Marie,” Nik explains.

I fall back on my heels, letting more space form between us so I can clear my head and follow his explanation. “Marie?” I question. “You found her in Bradge?”

Nik nods. “She was at the docks looking for you when we arrived. She approached us.”

I shake my head. “I’m surprised she’d even offer to help you when she saw Finn was there,” I say, knowing how much she hates the commander, and rightfully so for what he did to her. “I’m surprised you’re with him at all,” I add.
