They left the café and though Austin had in mind to check out motels near the freeway, Woody had other plans.
“Hey, I need some booze.”
“I was going to get us a room, then we can pick up a six-pack and some—”
“No. Now. Come on.” Woody tapped Austin’s arm.
“Why now? It’s early and you were hung over this morning.” Austin held out his hands in question. “And I want to head over to the warehouse to see if the fence has been opened again. I don’t know how long we’re going to get away with staying at the trailer park. Sooner or later someone’s going to see us.”
“Let’s get booze, then hit the park. We can hang out there and get drunk, then head back to the trailer if the warehouse isn’t opened up yet.”
“That’s like totally backwards thinking.”
“We never do anything my way, Austin. Just because you’re three years older don’t mean it’s always how you say.”
“But I’m dead right now. I don’t want to start downing beer right after breakfast. And it’s going to taste a lot better in an air conditioned motel room with TV and movies.”
“We can do that later.”
“Look.” Austin stopped their progress. “Can we get booze in an hour? Let me digest?”
“Screw you. Meet you back at the trailer. I don’t need you to get me liquor.”
“Yeah, you do!” Austin yelled after him. “I got ID!”
Woody flipped him off as he walked, not looking back.
“Dude!” Austin threw up his hands. “Woody!” Austin called after him but Woody didn’t stop.
The urge to race after Woody was strong. Woody had been so needy, Austin didn’t think he would do anything on his own, especially when Austin could easily buy him beer and vodka legally.
A thought occurred to him. A very dark thought. “No…” Austin said to himself. He shook his head on his own internal monologue. No. He’s just being Woody.
Cupping his hands so he would be heard, Austin yelled, “An hour?”
Woody acknowledged him with a wave.
A sinking feeling hit Austin’s gut as he watched Woody walk away. Not used to being on his own, Austin didn’t like it but tried to let it go. He headed in the direction of the warehouse, knowing sooner or later they would have to move back there.

Orlando had fallen asleep on the bed—in the warmth of the trailer, he’d become groggy and nodded off. A noise outside the trailer woke him. He sat up in alarm and watched the board covering the window shift and Woody climb in. They met eyes and Woody reacted in surprise. “Orlando!”
“Hey.” Orlando waited for Austin to be right behind him. He wasn’t.
“Hey, dude!” Woody was very chipper, holding something under his shirt and grinning wide.
“Hi, Woody.” Orlando sat up, moving away from the bed so he didn’t seem to be intruding.
“That your stuff?” Woody pointed to the bags.
“Yeah. Left home. I have nowhere to go.”
“Then it’s time to party!” Woody removed an opened bottle of vodka from under his shirt, set it on the floor in front of Orlando, and then emptied his pockets in a pile.
