All bands with Spirit mages need to be reviewed for spells laden into the music, declares a music reviewer. Sparky Adams swears that has to be a level of persuasion magic or some sort of compulsion. We must have been earlier than I thought, or people didn't move as fast as I expected. What I found fascinating was neither Stephen nor Yolanda asked me where Carelian was. I could feel him rumbling under my feet, and it kept me anchored and less anxious than I would have been otherwise.

It also meant we didn't get the constant freak out that newcomers seemed to have around him. Idiots. If they understood what he could and would do, they would have been attempting to bribe him non-stop.

I'd watched the round bench fill up with people. None of them mages, of course. The only mage I could see was the person recording this, a type of court reporter per Alixant.

~I'm going to move a bit. Stay there, but I'd like to see the others with me, without craning my neck,~ I told Carelian. I maneuvered the wheelchair so I was at a slight angle. It let me see at least some expressions and body language of other victims up here with me.

A podium stood off to one side and two people stood there. They were mages. Based on the tattoos, the one dressed in a dark navy suit was a Spirit mage strong in Soul. I'd lay money that was a truth senser, but then how did the elected officials get away with all the lying they did?

When it seemed like no more people were streaming in, though a quick glance behind me revealed a gallery packed like sardines, one of the mages stepped up to the podium.

"Attention. This investigative hearing is being called to order." He went through a bunch of formal things, such as having us swear to answer all questions to the best of our ability. Listing all the senators peering down at us with expressions ranging from curiosity to disdain. After completing all the formalities, the man spoke again from the podium. "The Chair for this hearing is Senator John Williams. Begin your opening statements." He stood at the podium, waiting.

The man in the middle of the curved station was in his sixties, with reading glasses, thinning gray hair, and a florid face. He needed to watch his drinking, given the number of broken capillaries alongside his nose and spreading across his cheeks.

"This is an investigative hearing into the tears occurring between the magical planes and Earth. As well as the dismal response to it. First, we call on Stephen Alixant to explain." He looked up, his eyes locked on Alixant.

I had to fight with my internal desires.
