EVERLY

“Miss Stillwater,” the lead centaur says, taking a step forward, angling his spear threateningly towards my heart. “Please kneel and put your hands above your head.”

“What’s going on?” I ask, my sore throat and lingering anger and frustration making my voice come out harsher than I intend. I don’t make any motion to do anything, other than just stand there, in obvious disbelief.

“You are under arrest,” he answers.

“For what?”

But, he doesn’t answer.

I open my mouth, and then promptly close it again.

The centaur huffs, and turns to his second in command. “Find the golem,” he says.

The second centaur nods and canters around me, back toward the trees of a nearby forest. I swallow hard and hope Riddle is okay. He’s a clever little creature, but he’s also dangerous. I don’t want him suddenly deciding to breathe fire or start eating people again.

“Kneel, Miss Stillwater,” the centaur in control commands. My fists clench at my sides and his eyes narrow warningly.

“On what grounds are you arresting me?” I demand.

I can feel eyes on me, now—not just those of the guards, and the passersby on the street in their carriages, but eyes from the windows. Eyes of students and teachers watching the freak get put in irons. Anger stirs in my stomach. I don’t like the feeling at all as it’s not one I’m accustomed to feeling.

“You’ll soon find out,” the centaur replies evenly. He takes another step forward, and I take a step back. I can feel the semi-circle behind me tense and creep closer.

I think of Dorian’s words: They are afraid.

I look to my side, back towards the forest. I could run. The trees would protect me, I’m sure of that.

“I would advise you not to attempt to escape,” the centaur says, as if reading my mind. He reaches for me, and I stagger back.

“No!” I yell, and conjure a manifestation of my fear, anger, frustration and sheer confusion. A large black vine tears out of the ground and wraps around the centaur, pinning his arms to his sides. I squeeze my fingers, feeling the thick vine begin crushing the creature. I can hear his bones straining. I can see his eyes bulging. I can see his fear.

It would be so easy…

“Seize her!” The words bring me back to the present, and I recoil from my own thoughts, but don’t have time to dwell on them. I throw up my arm with another shout, and from the ground springs a burst of earth and smoke, taking the form of a giant version of Riddle, just like it did in the classroom. I grit my teeth and stumble back as a sorcerer flings his magic at me and it hits the creature I’ve just created, rebounding, inert, into the ground.

The Riddle shadow shrieks and disappears, broken down to mere mist by the force of whatever disarming spell was thrown at me. My eyes widen when I realize it’s my sorcery teacher, Professor Ingram, who launched the attack, the same teacher who taught Dorian.
