Nevertheless, while this is the case, the fact that some Jews have left and some are contemplating leaving – though quantifying this is not possible – because, at the very least, they feel an atmosphere of ‘tolerance towards antisemitism’ that makes it impossible for them to stay, or more disturbingly they experience direct abuse, or they find the discourse around the Israel-Palestine conflict to be unbearably toxic, has to be accounted for. The Luciana Berger case is emblematic of this as she claimed that racist bullying by Labour members and supporters was responsible for her decision to leave. (It should be acknowledged that the accuracy of her claims is disputed: see Bob Pitt, 2019.) So can Jews leaving for such reasons be seen to suffer from a systemic institutional culture that permits this? Are they institutionally disadvantaged?
