Chapter Thirteen

“So,” I mused, handing Rory and Daniella each a glass of wine, then pouring a healthy portion for myself. “What’s up with you and Addison?” I took a long sip from my glass before turning so it would look as if I’d poured the same amount for each of us. I tossed the empty bottle in my recycling bin, which I’d made sure to empty before my guests arrived.

I balanced my glass and wiggled my way onto the bed, pulling a pillow over my lap, then reached for a chip. We hadn’t had a girls’ night sleepover in forever, so I’d pulled out the big guns. Chips, crack dip, wine, so much wine, Jello shots, which I was looking forward to, and pizza, burgers, and fries to be delivered in an hour. I was also sporting a brand-new Wonder Woman onesie pajama that had made Daniella and Rory jealous instantly, even though their onesies were adorable in their own right. Rory was rocking a Rainbow Dash onesie while Daniella had gone more haute couture and was wearing a leopard print onesie with ears. Her matching socks and twin braids completed the look.

I loved how weird my friends were.

Rory sighed and huffed out a breath fraught with frustration. “We’re good,” she said, working her jaw back and forth in a way that indicated she was lying through her teeth. I munched on a chip and waited for her to break.

“Fine,” she said with exasperation. “We’re not good. Remember how we ended our trip at my parents’ place so she could meet my entire family?”

Daniella and I nodded. Rory had regaled us with pictures and stories of how much everyone had loved Addison and welcomed her into the family.

“Well,” Rory drew the word out. “After hinting about a million times that I’d love to meet her family, I finally asked her straight out why she wasn’t introducing us. And do you know what she said?” Her eyes flared with frustrated anger.

“What?” I asked because it was expected, then took a drink.

“She said that her parents are really old fashioned and that she hasn’t told them about us because they’re homophobic as hell and will lose their ever loving shit when they find out their daughter’s soulmate is a woman!” Rory spoke so fast all of her words mushed together and came out in a single breath.

“Seriously?” Daniella gasped as my mouth fell open. It was the last thing I would have ever guessed.

“Seriously,” Rory confirmed, punching the pillow on her lap. “I told her it was okay and that we would tell them together, you know. Supportive mate and all that.”

We nodded.

“But then she asked if we could hold off for a while, because her parents are putting a shit ton of pressure on her to be the perfect daughter.” She made air quotes then a face. “And I get it,” her voice lost all of its heat. “I get it. I’m not an idiot. I get that they’re in mourning for Adeline and that Addison is just trying to keep the status quo.
