Chapter Nine

Petal’s Garden

My mouth is dry. I can’t swallow. Speak.

I don’t want anyone else to die.

Hecate above, don’t die.

Ra snatches my elbows and pulls me up. I raise my hand, shading my eyes against the sun.

The shadow makes for Kit, but just as fast, Loki streaks to intercept it.

Is he crazy?

Yet now through the watery blur, I can finally make out that it isn’t a Shadow Demon invading the calmness of Petal’s garden. And it’ll be Loki who’ll be doing the tearing apart.

My horrified gaze meets Ra’s determined one, as his wings beat. But then, Loki’s magic sweeps out in a wash of protective emerald, pushing us back.

Loki’s protecting me, my lovers, and TOF…? Does he even realize that he’s acting like a Guardian?

Loki knocks the forest creature onto his back, straddling him. He pins him down with his arm across his throat. The creature is like the beauty and wildness of the forest in one struggling bundle. Soft horse ears, along with nubby horns, poke out of his thick black curls that tumble all the way to the ground. They’re so black that they gleam as if wet. A matching horse tail sweeps the ground. His narrowed silver eyes are pale like moonlight.

My beautiful forest creature.

He’s only wearing green trousers that look woven out of moss with a silver flute tucked into the waistband like a sword. Yet I can’t blame Loki because the creature does look wild and he did come running out of the Eternal Forest.

“Who are you, assassin?” Loki hisses like he’s a second away from gutting him.

Kit falls back dramatically on the grass, hiding his face with his tails. “Save poor kitsune.”

Kit never misses the chance for mischief. Perhaps, that’s why Loki and Kit clash? It’s the same as two Alphas fighting to the death for dominance. If you get two tricksters together, prankster sparks will fly.

“Get on with you, my singing’s bad, but it’s never been accused of killing anyone before,” Loki’s captive gasps in a gentle Irish accent.

“Or are you a spy?” Loki says thoughtfully, pressing his arm harder. “Speak.”

“Lay off! I could if you eased up on the choking,” Loki’s captive splutters. “Did I miss the whole negotiation stage because I know that’s one of my limits.”

“Let go,” I holler, “he’s…” so much to choose from, “…a Guardian.”

Instantly, Loki pulls his arm away from his captive’s neck like he’s been burned but he doesn’t get off him.

Perhaps, he’s comfortable. I find that particular Guardian deliciously comfy to ride.

“Bard at your service.” Bard holds out his hand to Loki like he isn’t sprawled underneath him still.

Bard’s always been quick to forgive: too quick.

Loki ducks his head. “How many of you asshole Guardians are there?”

Bard pats Loki’s chest. “Why, you sweet flatterer, you.” He flutters his far too long to be fair eyelashes.

“Uh-huh.” Loki assesses him. “You’re the dangerous one, right?”

He’s talking about my Bard…?

To my surprise, however, Bard’s silver eyes flash in a way that thrills with danger. “Do I look dangerous?”

“Very.”

“Well then.”

I sigh.
