"Sugar," she said as sunlight streamed in the next morning.

"Hmm?"

"Can we go somewhere where I can really worship you?"

A smile spread across my face. I turned to face her and nodded. "We can."

Chapter Twenty-Five

Ella

Listening to Lulu snoring made the hour ride feel more like home than the one I had lived in for ten years. She was curled up in what had to be the most uncomfortable position, which she was definitely going to regret when she woke up. But it would be one of those things that was ingrained in my brain for the rest of my life.

"Hi."

Her sleepy voice made the butterflies in my stomach go wild. I brought her hand to my lips and kissed her fingers. "Hey there, sleepyhead."

She sat up and raised her hands above her head. "Does making a baby make you sleepy?"

"You're growing a human. I'd be surprised if you weren't sleepy."

Horse hooves running out of a barn sounded when she drummed her hands on her belly with a loud sigh.

"Freddy keeps touching my belly, and I think he thinks it's the baby." She cupped her hand around her mouth like she had a secret. "Don't tell him it's ‘cause I haven't pooped in three days."

"Yikes."

"Yikes, is right. I just want to poop, but also eat hot Cheetos, like a shit ton of hot Cheetos."

I pulled to the side of the road because her honesty made me laugh until my sides hurt. Tears rolled down my cheeks. It was the kind of laugh that turned silent after a while.

"Moments like these remind me how much I missed you over the years, but I tried to force myself not to."

"You have permission to think of me all you want now."

"That might be dangerous if not handled correctly, sugar."

My fingers flexed on the steering wheel. We were less than five miles away. I could go five miles without thinking of kissing her. Easy peasy.

Wrong. Not easy-peasy.

She leaned in as close as the arm rest would allow and placed her hand on my thigh. "Scared of a little danger, doctor?"

"Danger? No. I am, however, scared of hitting a tree."

Her laugh filled the small space between us and made goosebumps rise all over my skin. "If we make it there alive, we should take a bath and cuddle the rest of the day."

"Not opposed to that by any means. However, we're going to have to eat at some point. So, what would you like me to make you?"

"Make me, as in I'm dinner. Or make me, as in legit food?"

I shot her a look when we parked. "As appealing as the first one sounds, if I spend all day making you my meal, you'll die of starvation. Not a good look for a doctor."

She scrunched her nose before getting out of the car. After walking around the car, she wrapped her arms around my neck and rose on her tiptoes.

"Don't tempt the doctor. Got it."

I kissed the tip of her nose, then rested my forehead against hers. "I missed this, sugar.
