Chapter Seven

Benny’s laughter greeted Stefan as he stepped inside the atrium.

He paused in the doorway and watched the man he couldn’t get out of his thoughts tossing a ball back and forth with Bugsy. Benny seemed truly happy in that moment.

Which said a lot. Benny had been home just about a week, but he still didn’t smile much. Hearing him laugh was a balm to Stefan’s tired soul. He just wished he could hear more of it, but it seemed like every time he was around, Benny wasn’t.

Stefan was starting to feel like he had a communicable disease or something. He stepped into a room, and Benny stepped out. If something forced Benny to stay in the room, Benny made sure he stayed on the opposite side of the room from Stefan.

It was growing tiresome.

It was time for Stefan to pin Benny down and find out what in the hell was going on. Stefan walked further into the atrium, watching as Benny’s happy face went to near panic level when he realized Stefan was there. Stefan hated seeing that look on Benny’s face. He especially hated seeing it when he was involved in the frightened look.

Stefan almost gave up his resolve to track Benny down and find out why the man was avoiding him when he saw the sadness on Benny’s face as the man slid out of the room. But this couldn’t continue. This was the same thing that had pushed Benny to leave last time, the lack of communication.

that didn’t want it. But he wanted to know for sure that was the problem before then.

As soon as Benny disappeared down the hallway, some nonsense excuse about needing a nap tossed over his shoulders as he hurried away, Stefan went after him. He kept a bit of distance between them but only enough for Benny to not feel like he was being chased down—even if he was.

When Benny reached the door to his room, Stefan hurried to catch up, grabbing the edge of the door and holding it open when Benny went to close it. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

Benny spun and paled. “Stefan, wha—”

“We need to talk, Benny.”

“No, that’s not a good—”

Stefan crossed his arms, planting himself in front of Benny’s door.

“I’m not leaving until we talk, and neither are you.”

Benny started shaking his head, backing into the room. His hands were gripped together so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

“Stefan, please, this isn’t a good idea. Maybe—”

“Benny.” Stefan held out a hand to the cute little man. “If we—”

Stefan frowned when Benny cringed. ”Are you afraid of me, Benny?”

“No,” Benny replied, but the way he shied away from Stefan’s hand said otherwise.

“Benny, I’d never hurt you.”

Benny licked his lips. “I know.”

“Do you?” Stefan somehow doubted it. He moved around the far side of the room from Benny and walked over to the window seat he had often see Benny curled up in.
