INSPECTING YOUR HIVE

One of the more enjoyable aspects of beekeeping is the thrill of inspecting the hive, which offers a chance to watch your bees go about their many activities. When we were new beekeepers, we had no idea what we were doing or what we should be looking for. Your hive inspection should be a time to enjoy your bees up close and personal while also observing their overall health. Be sure to gather up everything you will need before you open your hive. Always use a smoker to calm your bees. You will be looking at very tiny eggs, so choose the proper visual assistance to help you see clearly. We use reading glasses to help us see up close. You may be nervous your first time, unsure of what to expect, so wear the proper amount of protective gear to help build your confidence. Stay calm and enjoy the experience. How many people have the privilege of watching honeybees work up close? Work your inspection from the back or side. If you perform your inspection from the front, you will hinder the flight of foragers coming and going.
