A lath house will help protect your lettuces and greens from the sun and prolong the spring-summer harvest. It also helps shield young seedlings from the heat when making the hot weather sowing.

By following this hot weather sowing procedure, I have never had any problem with the greens germinating and growing. But lettuces are another story. Sometimes lettuces absolutely, positively, refuse to germinate in the summer. The good news is, if the first attempt fails you still have a couple more weeks to try again before it is too late in the season. Wait a week or two and reseed. Remember, you can sow as late as six weeks before the earliest frost date. Unless you have incredibly bad luck, one of the later reseedings should be successful.
